My New Media Class-So Far

New Media is made up of so many different technologies. It includes transformations of old media to new media such as new papers have converged into wikis, blogs, online news and so on. It may also include computer-based communications such as second life, facebook and many more. We would not be able to have all these different types of new media if it weren't for the Internet, though I'm not saying these different technologies of new media are only computer based. Some other different transformations or convergence are books into e-books and so on. But the Internet is still one of the most useful tools within new media because we would not be able to have the different types of social networking sites we have today, as well as other computer based media. An example of New Media would be how many people are now not even using their television's anymore because they can be able to use their laptops to watch the programs they want to see. New Media is made up of so many different technologies that have converged form old media every day.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Modeling reality with virtual worlds such as second life use advertisements to promote their products. And with second life you can see the products actually being used. It not only Promotes products but services as well, such as clubs and so on. For instance in the article I've Been In That Club, Just Not In Real Life by Jeff Itzcoff, states that he visits lower east side more often in the virtual world then in the real world. The disadvantage of virtual worlds is the addiction you get once you start and sometimes some people can even mistake the real world from the virtual world if they get to in dept.

Social Networking

Social networking site such as tiwitter use advertisements to generate revenue for the company. Not only does the ad provide revenue source for company advertising their products but it also provides feedback from their costumers. For instance in the article Tweeting your Way to a job by Laura M. Holson, Mrs. Holson states that "to some, Twitter is an extension of customer service, an efficient way to solve problems for disgruntled customers. To others, the use of interactive media is strictly promotional: PepsiCo, for instance, recently advertised that it was looking for journalists and students to tweet during Internet Week in New York in June."Because social networking sites are used so often by working class citizens they found it fast to advertise job openings which promotes more qualified applicants to apply and allows companies to lessen time to advertise these positions. The only downside to social networking sites is that people without any technological knowledge can not receive any benefits from this.

Check Out Social Networking Sites

I'm not much of a social networking type of person but I do have them. Mostly because I got influenced and curious. My favorite Social networking site probably has to be Facebook because I am able to navigate on it easily. I know that other social networking sites are also easy to navigate but I like facebook because all my friends are there. I can do many things on facebook that I can't normally do on myspace. Plus there are a lot of interesting request/survey that I get that on myspace I don't usually get.

Blogs vs. Wikis

There's a significant set of differences between wikis and blogs. A blog brings its focus to the individual, and the individuals thoughts and opinions, whereas a wiki brings the focus more solidly to the information that is conveyed. There's also a significant set of comparison between wikis and blogs. Both blogs and wikis enable communication of information by a single person or a group of people and it also provides the ability to get feedback.convergence is very important in today's network because it is useful for companies. A way in which blogs can be used for collaboration is by given feedback to companies, ratings on a companies service and or product,etc.. For instance, in Wal-Mark Tastemakers Write Unfiltered Blog by Micheal Barbaro, he explains how Wal-Mark has taken an advantage in comments made by regular people on their Check Out Blog. They use the feedback's from buyers rather then executives to decides what they should purchase in order to sell and gain profit from.

Old vs. New

One question that we can baffle a person about is to explain how we can distinguish "new media" from "old media"? I mean new media is just a transformation or a merge of old media. But then again, what we think of as old media was actually new media back then. So how can we distinguish new media from old media? The answer is simple WE CAN'T. New media will always be considered as old media and vise versa. What we think as new media now will be considered old media later years or maybe even tomorrow. For instance, one type of old media is books that transformed into eBooks, hypertext, wikis, even this blog as new media. Later on these types of new media will be considered as old media. Heck by then we would propably be reading in midair on flat paper wieght index card screens. Like in those future movies we like to watch so much.

Medicine 2.0

I stumbled across the topic about medicine 2.0 when reading the new york times about a couple of weeks ago. I had read that tech firms where pushing to computerize patients histories. This sounded like a very interesting topic to research about. There have been many pros and cons dealing with medicine 2.0 because it is all web based and as you know the computer isn't always the safest tool to use. Medicine 2.0 (also related to Health 2.0) is the use of specific web tools in order to enhance the health care industry. When dealing with Medicine 2.0 there is a contribution of patients, doctors, scientist, etc. that collects and creates openness between each other. The approach I would like to take in this project is to show how Medicine 2.0 effects the society itself by viewing both the pros and cons.

What is New Media?

Technologies that are part of new media include transformation of existing media such as photography, animation, television, film, newspaper. Also computer communications, such as e-mail, chat room, im, avatar-based communication forums, teleconferencing, voip, mobile telephony, blogs, wikis. Because of the evolution of new media, the Internet plays an important role. If it were not for having the Internet, computer based communications would not be able to evolve as fast as it has now. I think that new media is not replacing old media put enhancing it. Long time ago, in order to send a letter to someone, you had to wait days, months or even never(because the letter would get lost) till that person got it. Now with the new media coming out everyday, you can send your letter through e-mail and they get it in a minute. For instance in the reading about Who needs TV? I'm watching on a laptop by Laura M. Holson, many people do not watch their shows, new, sports, etc. on the television anymore. They watch it on the laptop which can be a connivance thing to do when you have missed something you really wanted to see. It does not mean that they don't have a t.v. or that they don't watch t.v. but that they are comfortable watching their shows on the laptop then the t.v. because it is more better for them. They can narrow down their selections., and watch the shows that they really want to watch.
